Articulation therapy for kids
Sound by sound, all the way to clear speech.
“Wabbit” instead of “rabbit.” “Tat” instead of “cat.” That’s articulation — and we turn the work into play so it feels like a game your child wants to keep playing.
- Ages 2 to 12
- 1-on-1 sessions
- Online or in-home
The basics, broken down
What articulation actually means
The mechanics
Articulation is the physical act of producing speech sounds — the precise way the lips, tongue, jaw, and breath move to make /r/, /s/, /sh/, /th/, and every other sound in English. When something’s off, sounds get swapped, dropped, or distorted.
Articulation vs. phonology
Articulation is sound-by-sound. Phonology is the patterns a child is using (like dropping every final consonant, or fronting back sounds). Both fall under speech sound disorders — and we treat both, usually in the same playful session.
When sounds come in
Sounds develop in a predictable order — /p/, /m/, /b/ early; /r/, /s/, /th/, /l/ much later. If a sound isn’t in by its typical age, or your child is consistently hard to understand, that’s the cue for articulation therapy.

Signs your child might benefit
You don’t have to be sure something’s “wrong.” These are the everyday cues that bring most families to us:

Even one of these is enough reason to look into it. We're here when you're ready.
Even if you’re not sure, an evaluation gives you an answer. Most parents leave knowing exactly what’s going on and what to do about it.
How we work on it
Every Speech Bee is a licensed, ASHA-certified SLP with pediatric training. Articulation therapy follows a clear arc — but it never feels clinical to your child.
1. Evaluation
We listen to your child read, describe pictures, and just chat. We figure out which sounds are off, in which positions (beginning, middle, end of word), and whether the issue is articulation, phonological, or both.
2. Isolation & syllables
We start where it’s easy — making the target sound on its own and in simple syllables. Mirrors, tactile cues, and silly games turn this into a 5-minute warm-up your child looks forward to.
3. Words, phrases, sentences
We layer the sound up: words → short phrases → longer sentences. Each step uses books, board games, and storytelling instead of flashcards.
4. Conversation & generalization
The hardest step is using the sound during real conversation, with people who aren’t their SLP. We rehearse it together, then loop in parents and teachers so the new sound sticks at home and at school.
5. Discharge with a plan
Once your child uses the sound automatically, we taper off. You get a home-practice plan and a clear way to reach us if something slips later.
In-home articulation therapy
An in-home Speech Bee comes to your living room. For articulation work, that has real benefits:
- Your child is regulated — they’re in their safe space, not a strange clinic.
- We use your child’s actual books, toys, and pets as practice material.
- Siblings and parents can join in, so the new sound spreads through the household instead of staying with the SLP.
- Sessions slot into your routine — after school, before dinner, on a Saturday morning. No drive, no waiting room.
Virtual articulation therapy
Articulation is one of the best-suited services for virtual sessions. Decades of research show online articulation therapy works just as well as in-person for most kids.
- Live video — your child and the Speech Bee see each other’s faces and mouths clearly.
- Built-in games and shared whiteboards keep little hands and brains busy.
- Parents have a tiny role to play (mostly tech setup) — your child carries the session.
- Great for families in rural areas, busy weeknights, or anyone who’d rather skip the commute.

Common questions
How long does articulation therapy take?
It depends on the sound, the child, and how often you practice between sessions. A single distorted /s/ in an older child might resolve in 8–12 sessions. Multiple sound errors in a younger child often run 6–12 months at one or two sessions per week.
Is my child too young for therapy?
Probably not. We see kids as young as 2 for early-developing sounds and overall intelligibility. The best research shows earlier is better — by the time a child is in kindergarten, peers start to notice.
Will my insurance cover it?
Many do, especially when there’s a documented speech sound disorder. We don’t bill insurance directly yet, but we provide the paperwork (a superbill) so you can submit for reimbursement.
Can we just do online?
Yes — articulation translates beautifully to virtual. If you’re on the fence, start with a free intro call and we’ll give you our honest read.
